Measuring Reverb

Post by elmood »

Hi.

I've started to think about reverb a lot since learning how to make it in the FV-1. Although it is very subjective, I'm trying to figure out a way to quantify what I'm hearing at least for comparison purposes. I'm wondering if anyone knows techniques for analyzing reverb sounds?

I started to write a program to analyze impulse response WAV files. In terms of what characterizes the sound of a reverb, it seems a lot different than say, the timbre of an instrument. Has anyone else worked on something like this and are there common methods for comparing impulses of different reverbs?

Most of all I guess I'm curious to know what others think are the most important qualities of what makes a reverb sound like it does, and how to best measure and quantify it. (if that's even possible)

Your thoughts are appreciated.

I suggest making Google search on "impulse response measurement software". You will find a lot of responses.
