Experimental Noize - SKRM-C8-eTap2: For Piets echotapper

Post by tomsouthtrader »

Hello.

Looking for some with more information about these modules as the echotapper website is down.

Mostly looking to know about the pre programmed algorithms?
Is there a full set of 8?
What are the CTRL pots doing?

Also is the second header on the SKRM modules a link to the SCL and SDA lines?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Tom,
Although still in touch with us, Piet has retired from echos development but 3 of us were actively involved with Piet in his Etap2hw project using the SKRM daughter board you ask about. Latterly this has developed into a fully micro-computer controlled unit now called Blue Nebula with lots of information available on the StanleyFX website.
StanleyFX also produce a manual unit called Baby Blue similar in concept to Piet's original Etap2hw but smaller in size, the manual will be relevant to the SKRM module you are interested in. http://www.stanleyfx.co.uk/babyblue.html . Here you can also hear sounds similar to those from the SKRM FV-1 based daughter board.

The Meazzi echo machines were Italian produced disc or wheel units where the magnetic medium was coated onto the periphery of an aluminium disc in reality a Juke Box record turntable. Vox and Roland units were magnetic tape based.

There are 8 programs available in the SKRM C8-eTap2 board these are:
1) Meazzi 1F - a 5 playback 1 record head system - Controls are Pot 1 Wet/Dry mix, Pot 2 a 5-position A,B,C,E,F selector Pot 3 Feedback level.
2) Meazzi 1F-special as above but with Dick Denney customised head level settings as applied to Hank Marvin's unit in the recording studio.
3)Meazzi Echomatic II-Bank same controls as above containing some of Piet's favourite settings from the later 4- Head Meazzi Echomatic II.
4)Vox Long Tom Classic a 6-Head tape machine with equi-spaced heads. Controls as above.
5)Meazzi Echomatic II Classic -4 playback heads: Controls are Pot 1 Heads 1,2,3 combined level Pot 2 Head 4 level Pot 3 Feedback (Think Wonderful Land sounds)
6)Roland RE501 Mode 5. 2 heads used. Controls are Pot 1 Dry/Wet Mix Pot 2 Speed of delay Pot 3 Feedback (think Cavatina type sounds)
7)Reverb Tremolo Abbey Road Style Reverb. Controls are Pot 1 Reverb Depth Pot 2 Tremolo Rate Pot 3 Effect Depth
8)Echomatic E1J Classic - a 6 head playback 1 record head system. Controls as Meazzi 1F (Used for The Shadows Apache recording 1960)

The 2nd header is used for programming the eeprom, we use a PICKIT2 programmer (not PICKit3).

Hope this is helpful. If you need any more info please ask.
Regards,
Steve Mitcell

Thank you so much for the information!

I had been over the stanleyfx site before when looking for different layouts for review.
However the site seems to have slightly less public information than it contained before.
Not that I can blame them for not wanting to release full schematics for active products!

But would you say the recommended layouts for the other modules is a good place to start when making an interface for the boards?

Thank you again!

Hi Tom,
Mick here, I have never had any schematics on the Stanley website as far as I can remember but I made available schematics of public FV-1 circuits on the Diystompbox forums a long time ago.

There are some new schematics made available over there which have been posted by a few different members which will work well with any of the SKRM modules, you could use the recommended layouts for any of the modules published and they will work with the Echotapper module.

Piet's Echotapper schematic included a jfet preamplifier front end to help create the character of the Meazzi tape echo preamp.
